SWAPO, südwestafrikanische Volksunion;
politische Organisation in
Namibia; 1960 als Befreiungsorganisation gegründet; hervorgegangen aus der
Ovamboland People's Organization. 1964 von der OAU anerkannt, seit 1972 mit Beobachterstatus bei der UNO und 1976 von der UN-Generalversammlung als »einzige authentische
Vertretung des namibischen Volkes« betrachtet, kämpfte die SWAPO gegen die
Herrschaft der
Republik Südafrika über Namibia. Nach der
Entlassung der portugiesischen Kolonien in die
Unabhängigkeit (1975) führte sie,
unterstützt v. a. von kubanischen Truppen, von Angola aus einen Guerillakrieg gegen die in Namibia stationierten südafrikanischen Truppen. Nach
Abschluss eines Waffenstillstands (1988) und der
Einleitung eines Entkolonialisierungsprozesses gewann die SWAPO 1989 die Wahlen zur verfassunggebenden Versammlung;
der Präsident der SWAPO, S. Nujoma, wurde 1990
Staatspräsident des unabhängigen Namibia.
